As Google and other search engines build in AI-generated answers, knowledge panels and informational snippets, a trend is growing that challenges traditional digital marketing: the rise of zero-click searches.

But what do the data say about this shift, and what does it mean for SEO strategies?

In this article, we look at the latest evidence, identify the sectors most affected and set out practical strategies for competing in an ecosystem where visibility matters as much as the click.

The new search landscape

Users now get many of their answers directly on the results page, in what are known as zero-click searches. This happens when the SERP already holds enough information in snippets, side panels or AI overviews, removing any need to visit the source website.

According to the SparkToro/Datos study (2024), almost 60% of searches in the US and Europe end without a single click, a share that has grown with the introduction of AI Overviews. The Pew Research Center (2025) backs this up: when an AI Overview is shown, click-through rates to external sites halve — a structural change, not merely a passing one.

The real impact of “click-free SEO”

2025 data and global trends

The latest reports from Semrush and Ahrefs show that AI Overviews appear in roughly 7% to 9% of SERPs and have a disproportionate impact on user attention. Even when users do click, they do so less often on traditional organic positions. SISTRIX (2025) put a figure on it: the CTR for the first organic position fell from around 34% to 23% on pages with featured snippets. These findings reinforce what the market is already seeing: organic visibility remains valuable, but the click is increasingly hard-won.

The sectors most affected

News, health and finance

Studies by Similarweb (2025) and the Reuters Institute Digital News Report show that the sectors most affected are those producing quick-consumption informational content, such as news, health topics or personal finance. In these cases, Google tends to provide direct answers on the SERP, cutting traffic to the original sites and creating a new challenge: how to generate value when the user never leaves the search engine's page.

The role of generative AI

AI Overviews mark a step change: by synthesising information from multiple sources, they reduce the need to click even further. That said, research by BrightEdge (2025) indicates that the impact varies widely by sector — it is smaller in transactional searches (such as e-commerce) and more pronounced on informational topics.

A strategic response — measure, adapt, evolve

Measuring what really matters

In a context where the click is less frequent, the focus needs to shift from purely quantitative metrics to indicators of visibility and brand authority:

  • Impressions and average position (Google Search Console)
  • Share of SERP — the percentage of visual space taken up by the brand's results
  • Citations in AI Overviews and snippets
  • Entity recognition (the brand as an entity in the Knowledge Graph)

These metrics help you understand the true reach of your digital presence, even without a direct visit to the website.

Optimising for new visibility surfaces

SEO optimisation now includes structured data (Schema.org), question-and-answer content formats and building topical authority. The aim is no longer just to “come first”, but to be the reference the search engine cites in its answers.

Evidence-based best practices include:

  • Creating modular content, with direct answers and further depth within the same article.
  • Using semantic mark-up (FAQ, HowTo, Product, Organization) to maximise your presence in rich results.
  • Producing authoritative content with verified sources, named authors and expert context: all elements that support E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness).

From traffic metrics to influence metrics

“Click-free SEO” forces brands to rethink what digital success looks like. The click still matters, but influence is now also measured by the ability to shape answers. Rather than simply generating traffic, the new SEO has to build trust, strengthen brand recall and position content as a credible source.

The click is the means, not the end

The data are clear: in 2025, more than half of all searches end without a site visit, and AI-generated answers are cementing this trend. But that is not the end of SEO — it is the start of a new phase of SEO. The brands that will win here are those that see the SERP as a visibility ecosystem, rather than simply a gateway to the website. Because, in the end, the real goal of SEO is the same as it has always been: making sure the brand is found, remembered and preferred — with or without clicks.
