For years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was seen as conversational support: tools that answered questions, suggested copy or helped clarify ideas. In 2026, that logic is no longer enough. The arrival of autonomous work agents marks a structural shift: AI stops “chatting” and starts executing.

This article looks at how the launch of Anthropic's Cowork represents a turning point in the adoption of autonomous agents by non-technical professionals, and how this shift will directly affect marketing strategy, productivity and decision-making within organisations.

The launch of Anthropic's Cowork represents a turning point. For the first time, autonomous agents — until now reserved for highly technical settings — are becoming accessible to non-technical professionals, including marketing, management and operations teams.

What changes with Cowork?

Unlike traditional interactions with language models, Cowork doesn't just respond to requests. This autonomous agent accesses a folder on the user's computer directly, reads, edits and creates files, and carries out tasks step by step, working towards a goal.

In practice, this means tasks such as:

  • organising hundreds of downloaded files;
  • building spreadsheets from scattered screenshots;
  • structuring documents from fragmented information.

No longer require constant human input. Once the objective is set, Cowork plans, executes and adjusts the work asynchronously, behaving more like a colleague than a tool. This capability profoundly changes how time and focus are managed within teams.

A new competitive landscape

Cowork arrives in a fast-moving ecosystem, where autonomous agents are already starting to redefine different areas of digital work.

Microsoft, with GitHub Copilot Workspace, leads in software development through what it calls Agent Mode, allowing AI to navigate repositories, run commands and fix errors automatically. Integration with the Model Context Protocol also makes it possible to contextualise code with data from tools such as Jira or Slack.

Cognition AI, with Devin 2.0, positions itself as a genuine “virtual colleague”. Through Interactive Planning, the agent creates multi-step technical roadmaps before writing a single line of code, operating with autonomy guided by clear objectives.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Studio, meanwhile, allows the creation of agents capable of managing complete business processes, integrating with Teams, SharePoint and more than 1,400 external connectors.

Cowork sets itself apart by bringing this logic of autonomy into the day-to-day work of non-technical professionals – including marketing, operations and management.

Three structural impacts for marketing and business

  • Democratising automation

The main change is the removal of the technical barrier. Small and medium-sized businesses now have access to automation capabilities that, until now, were reserved for large organisations with specialist teams.

This is particularly relevant in a context where the PRR offers up to €300,000 for digitalisation projects, making the adoption of autonomous agents not only viable but strategically advisable.

In marketing, this translates into the ability to automate repetitive, operational tasks without compromising creativity or strategy.

  • A new economic equation for productivity

Organisations already using autonomous agents report savings of between 30 and 74 minutes per user, per month. Set against an average cost of around €28 per user/month, the return on investment becomes clear.

More than time saved, what's at stake is a redefinition of the human hourly cost. Activities that once consumed skilled resources can now be delegated, freeing teams for higher-value strategic work such as planning, creativity and decision-making.

For marketing, this means less time spent on manual execution and more focus on strategy, analysis and process optimisation.

  • Emerging risks and new challenges

The exponential growth of AI-generated content brings new risks with it. Auditing processes, tracing decisions and validating outputs all become more complex.

On top of that, threats such as prompt injection have evolved into more advanced concepts like agent hijacking – manipulating autonomous agents to introduce vulnerabilities or unwanted behaviour.

In this new landscape, agent security stops being an isolated technical topic and becomes a critical discipline for any organisation adopting these technologies.

Strategic implications for businesses

Adopting autonomous agents isn't just a technology decision – it's a strategic one. To make the most of this new phase, companies need to act on three fundamental fronts:

  • Identify high-impact use cases, especially processes that are repetitive, well documented and low risk;
  • Establish clear governance models, defining who can create agents, what data they can access and how their work is audited;
  • Balance autonomy with control, ensuring efficiency without compromising security or accountability.

Cowork already builds in this balance by asking for confirmation before carrying out significant actions. This hybrid model will be decisive for responsible adoption in a business context.

The defining moment

We are looking at the equivalent of the “GPT-3 moment” for business operations. Just as GPT-3 demonstrated, for the first time, the true potential of natural language, autonomous agents are now showing that Artificial Intelligence is capable of managing complete work cycles.

For marketing, this represents a profound shift: from assisted execution to delegated execution. Brands that understand this transition sooner will be better placed to gain efficiency, scale operations and free up human talent for what AI still can't replace – vision, creativity and strategy.

In 2026, the question will no longer be whether autonomous agents are part of your marketing strategy, but how they are integrated intelligently, securely and with results in mind.
